FAQs

How does acupuncture work?
The simplest answer is that acupuncture works to restore balance in the body. It does this through stimulating specific points on certain ‘meridians’ or pathways along the body that communicate with the nervous system, organs and muscle systems.  In fact, many of the acupuncture meridians discovered by the Chinese thousands of years ago actually correspond with a western map of the nervous system today.

From a more western perspective, acupuncture works with the nervous, immune and musculoskeletal systems to “remind” the body where it needs direct a little more attention through stimulating very small needles in certain areas of the body. It essentially helps activate and regulate the body’s own built in response systems to encourage healing, whether that be through hormone regulation, immune system boosting or pain relief.

What should I wear to acupuncture?
Loose fitting comfortable clothes are best, however we do offer gowns and blankets if needed.
Can my partner/child/friend come to the appointment?
If you are partnered and trying to conceive, we’d love for you to bring your partner along to discuss treatment plans and ask questions.

Ideally you’ll want to come to your appointment without young children (unless, of course, the treatment is for your child!). This is because we will want to spend the valuable time we have together focusing on YOU. However, we know that childcare is not always easy to access, so if you need to bring your child with you to you appointment, you may. Just be sure to bring someone along to tend to them if you’re getting acupuncture – you’ll need to lay mostly still for about 30 minutes.

Other friends and family are welcome to join if it is your preference.

Will you engage with my other health care providers?
Yes! We love consulting with other health care providers. Per your request, we will be in touch with any care provider you’d like, and will keep your other providers posted on the type of care you’re receiving with us.
What kind of research supports acupuncture and integrative medicine?
We have a library full of research to support acupuncture and functional medicine for various health conditions and would love to share them with you. Please email directly with research questions.
Does acupuncture hurt?
The most honest answer we can give here is: not usually. It would be untrue to say that acupuncture never hurts, but for the vast majority of people, and for the vast majority of acupuncture points, it is not painful, but in fact rather enjoyable. For patients who are more sensitive to acupuncture needles, contact needling (where the skin is not penetrated) may be used.
Are Chinese herbs safe?
When purchased from reputable sources and prescribed correctly, absolutely, yes. We recognize that there has been some concern over contamination of Chinese herbs in the past few years. While it is true that some (unrepeatable) sources of herbs may be cause for some concern, we guarantee that we only source our herbs from the highly reputable manufactures. The herbs we use are tested for contaminants and proven safe for consumption before being sold.
How long will I need treatment?
This depends on what kind of health issues we are working on and how long they have been of concern. A general rule of thumb is the more acute a problem is, the less time it will take to improve. Longer standing ailments will take longer to treat. Remember, it took time to get to the condition you’re in now, and it takes time to re-train the body and guide it back to homeostasis. Our ultimate goal is to get you well so that you don’t need us anymore.
Do you take insurance?

We do not bill insurance, however we are happy to provide you with an insurance super bill, (aka, a coded receipt) that you may submit to your insurance company directly for reimbursement (depending on your plan). Note: most insurance plans do not cover acupuncture for fertility. Payment is due at time of service.
